Stage seven of the Tour de Langkawi finished in another bunch sprint, with the four remaining Mitchelton-BikeExchange riders taking an easier day in the bunch for the short 106.8km stage.
An initial breakaway of six, that soon reduced to five proved to be the only major move of the day, despite unsuccessful count attacks from the bunch.
The peloton, keen to see another bunch sprint, never gave the group much more than a two-minute advantage and they had their way with the race back together in the final kilometres before Simone Bevilacqua (Neri-KTM) won his first stage of the race.
“Today’s stage was a simple lap of the beautiful island of Langkawi and with a small breakaway of six riders away, that was destined to be brought back, it was an uneventful stage for our boys.
“All riders finished safely as the commissaries made the right move in declaring GC from three kilometres to go, due to the number of speed bumps in the final kilometer. Now to light up the final stage, that should be well animated due to the punchy climb on the finishing circuits.”
Dave Sanders – Sport Director:
“James and then Chaves went with some early moves but then missed a group of six that went away for most of the stage. It all came back together for a sprint finish ad Liu did a good job with the bidons.”
