Niu Yikui  finished today’s second stage in 10th place for Mitchelton-BikeExchange after being active throughout the day with Bi Wenhui spending most of the stage in the breakaway.

It was a fierce and fast start to the 161km day, with many riders trying to get away. After around 40km of racing, finally the elastic snapped and a group of eight-riders were able to break free and amongst the group was Wenhui for Mitchelton-BikeExchange.

The leading group reached an advantage of just over three-minutes and spent almost 100kilometres away from the peloton. Wenhui was the first of the escapees to be reeled in, with all riders eventually being caught inside 20km to go, ready for a reduced bunch sprint to the line.

On a slight up hill finish the riders powered up the drag with Yikui starting his sprint early and finishing in a respectable 10th place for the team.

After two-stages New Zealander James Oram sits in 11th position on the overall classification with three more days to come.

Niu Yikui

“I was in excellent form today, that’s why with only three of us in the peloton (Bi Wenhui was out in the breakaway) and after some bidon duty I could still have good legs for the final sprint.

“The uphill finish was about 6% and a bit harder than I expected. I started my sprint too early and couldn’t hold on my position to the finish.

“The stage winner Martin Laas was very strong and so experienced, he knew exactly when he should start the final kick and open the gap. I think that’s what I should learn from him.”

Andrew Smith – Sport Director

“It was a good effort by the guys. Bi got into the break, which wasn’t easy and took about 40kilometres to stick. The plan was to get Niu into a good position for the finish, which they did and he managed to crack to top ten finish.

“The guys are racing better each day and Niu was visibly disappointed with his finish, which is a good sign and he’s learning and fighting.”
