After the surprise of yesterday’s opening stage, stage two of Le Tour de Langkawi finished in the expected bunch sprint.
As Mohd Saleh (Terengganu Cycling Team) claimed the stage Mitchelton-BikeExchange finished without a rider in the top 10, but leader James Oram finished safely in the group to maintain his position on the general classification with six days of racing to go.
Sprint second time around:
A large break of 12 went early in proceedings, but unlike yesterday were kept on a tighter leash today, with their advantage never more than four minutes.
There was never a lot of cooperation at the front and before the bunch had reach the 100km mark, three riders had broken away and their previous counterparts were swallowed up by the pack shortly after.
The gap to the remaining trio extended once again this time to almost four and a half minutes, before the peloton reacted and chase group of seven went in pursuit.
A regrouping behind saw the gap down to one minute with 25km to go before it was back together in the final 10km and set for the bunch sprint won by Saleh.
Mitchelton-BikeExchange leader Oram finished safely in the bunch with teammate Brayan Chaves, to move up from 21st to 11th overall after two days of racing.
“Today was a good transition stage with the sprint teams and yellow jersey team controlling the race almost all day, which meant for an easy day for us.
“Unfortunately Niu was taken out with 4km to go but is okay, just a few grazes.
“I’m fairly sure I would have finished inside the top 20 again to move up on GC, which will be good for the team, as the car will move up the convoy.”
