A tough edition of the Tour of Qinghai Lake drew to a close with a city centre circuit on stage 13 as the sprinter’s took the spoils once more.
Mitchelton-BikeExchange came home safely in the pack and wrapped up the best Chinese team classification while Colombian Brayan Chaves walks away with a top-20 placing on the general classification.
The final stage wasn’t favourable to anyone in the squad and with other goals in mind the riders made sure they finished the race with all seven riders, while Matt Gibson (Burgos-BH) sprinted to victory in Yinchuan.
Jiankun Liu and Bieken Nazaerbieke also claimed second and third in the best Asian rider classification, with the team taking fourth in the general team classification at the end of a punishing 13 -days of racing in China.
“I’m happy about finishing top-20 on GC as it was one of the team objectives, so it’s good to do it! This race was quite hard, with big climbs and also altitude. All the team did an awesome job.”
“I really want to say thanks to everyone. My race calendar for the next months has not been confirmed yet, but I do enjoy racing in China and I hope I can do more races here.”
Andrew Smith (Sports Director):
“All good in the final stage. Good performance by the team to finish with all 7 riders, which would be important for the remainder of our season. We finished on top of the Best Asian Team Classification and 2nd and 3rd in the Asian Individual Classification. Which is excellent performance by the whole team.
Also, we have Chaves in the top-20 in the GC and we’re fourth in the team’s classification. After this race the Chinese riders have their National Champs at the end of August and hopefully Tour of Qinghai Lake would allow them to be in good condition for that and we can keep the jersey within the team. Then we will have a short training camp ahead of Tour of China I and II.”
